Directors and Trustees and Patrons

Steve Cliffen
Co-Founder, Chairman and Director

SteveSteve has been involved in Special Educational Needs for well over 30 years. Initially for 12 years as a teacher in the East London before moving to Switzerland to become Head of Special Needs at the International School of Geneva. On returning to the UK Steve worked as a Head Teacher in Norfolk and Bournemouth before becoming Principal and then proprietor of Coxlease School in Hampshire.

Fund raising expeditions to India and Africa gave Steve the opportunity to visit schools and projects where he was able to see at first hand dedicated staff working with needy children in the most testing conditions with very little funding. The influence of these experiences combined with involvement in UK based charities led to the vision of creating a ‘foundation’ that would support worthy causes in a variety of ways.

The vision became a realistic when Steve ‘retired’ from the ‘coal face’ of the teaching profession and sold Coxlease School in 2006 - the following year The Cicely Foundation was founded.

As Director of the Hay-on-Wye Outdoor Training Activity Centre in Wales, a Trustee of the National Association of Behavioural, Emotional and Social Difficulties Schools (NAES) and a Trustee of a special school in Yorkshire and work for Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO), Steve is still actively involved in a wide range of education projects.

Maureen Cliffen

After a period studying counselling, Maureen is now heavily involved in the work of The Cicely Foundation.

Maureen has a passion for helping others and because of her experience in education it was inevitable that founding The Cicely Foundation, along with her husband Steve, was going to be the source of great pride. This, of course, was strengthened when the foundation was named after her mother Cicely Lee who died of Leukaemia in 1983 at the age of just 53 years.
